What do folks look for when they are seeking an iconic New Hampshire village country Inn? It may be a glimpse into the past, a Currier and Ives nostalgic scene, like this vintage Christmas greeting. It may be a place to escape for a quiet respite in comfortable warm surroundings and enjoy a great meal. For the Christmas holidays or any time of year, a New England country inn is the perfect place to escape to.
Along the scenic 30 mile long Currier and Ives Byway that winds through rural towns is the town of Henniker, New Hampshire. Iconic, you bet. Set along the Contoocook River you will find historic buildings that house shops, galleries and restaurants that reflect a timeless New England quaintness. You will also find the Colby Hill Inn. For over 50 years wayfarers have stopped and tarried awhile at this Inn. Stayed a night or two, relaxed, dined and left refreshed and satisfied. That’s what it is all about!
Innkeepers have called Henniker and the Colby Hill Inn home for five decades. If you are seeking a lifestyle change as an innkeeper and desire to call a New England small town home, the Colby Hill Inn may be your calling.
Henniker is conveniently located in southern New Hampshire, just 90 miles from Boston and 15 miles from Concord, New Hampshire’s capital. Like Garrison Keillor’s fictional town, Lake Wobegon, Henniker may also be called, ‘the little town that time forgot’. But Henniker is real and very authentic. Today, Henniker is the gateway to a very active resort area. New Hampshire’s mountains and rivers provide skiing, white water kayaking and excellent fly fishing. Yet less than a hour’s drive is coastal New Hampshire and Maine.
The Colby Hill Inn is conveniently located just up a country road from the village. A beautiful federal home with historic barns surrounded by perennial gardens, all on five acres of land. The property has been lovingly restored into the classic New Hampshire village country inn for today’s traveler. Fourteen guest rooms in the main building and Carriage House, large dining rooms and fully equipped commercial kitchen. The 40×100 historic dairy barn is an incredible space for future conversion.
The Colby Hill Inn is not only a quiet and comfortable respite for guests, it is the same for the innkeepers. The owner’s quarters is a completely separate converted post and beam barn with cathedral ceilings, two full baths, a large living room, kitchen and office. In addition there is a separate finished one-bedroom apartment. All very conveniently connected to the Inn.
Like a Currier and Ives print, a glimpse into the past can also be a view to the future for aspiring innkeepers seeking to purchase a great business in a timeless authentic location.
